Google taps retail with NYC store Huawei founder urges shift to software A Huawei executive says the Chinese firm will keep on developing devices running on Windows Phone, apparently not fazed that Microsoft will be both a hardware and software supplier on the OS platform following its purchase of Nokia’s Devices & Services unit.“We remain one of Microsoft’s strategic partners,” said Richard Ren – quoted by The Wall Street Journal – who heads up the company’s consumer unit in Europe.Huawei, along with Nokia, Samsung and HTC, all manufacture devices using Windows Phone. Of those, only Nokia is solely reliant on Windows Phone – the other three device manufacturers place greater focus on the rival Android operating system.There has been some analyst speculation that Microsoft’s Nokia deal could give it an advantage over other Windows Phone manufacturers, not least in getting new devices out the door faster than its rivals.Microsoft executive VP Terry Myerson, in a blog shortly after the Nokia acquisition was announced, nonetheless maintained that the software giant could both compete with and serve device makers as customers.“We have exciting ideas, and so do our OEM partners,” he said. “Our partners bring innovation, diversity and scale to Windows. HONOLULU – A birdie on the final hole gave Chris Kirk a 5-under 65 and the outright lead in the Sony Open, and that’s about it. Cloudy conditions and only a gentle, Pacific breeze meant just about everyone was in the mix at Waialae Country Club – even John Daly. At one point, there was a six-way tie for the lead Saturday in the third round. An hour later, 14 players were separated by a single shot. Kirk got up-and-down from a bunker on the par-5 18th hole, making a 10-foot birdie putt that gave him the lead over Harris English (67) and PGA Tour rookie Will Wilcox (64), who is playing only the third PGA Tour event of his career. Kirk was at 12-under 198. Daly matched the low score of the third round with a 64 and was five shots behind. Masters champion Adam Scott wasn’t making up any ground, dropped two shots late in his round and finished with a two-putt birdie for a 71 and was two shots behind. A lot of courses I think lend themselves to you need to know what your position is going into any given hole, but out here, I don’t think that’s really the case. They’re just so volatile with guys making birdies and bogeys. ”I’ll just probably try to keep my head down and make as many birdies as I can.” Former Sony Open champion Jerry Kelly (66) and Jimmy Walker (67) were at 10-under 200, while the group at 201 included Robert Allenby (65), Pat Perez (66), Retief Goosen (66) and Johnson, who had a 66. Brian Stuard, who had a one-shot lead going into the third round, had a 71 and also was still only three shots behind. Perez was among those tied for the lead until he four-putted the 14th, the final three putts from 3 feet. PGA champion Jason Dufner three-putted from 3 feet on the 18th hole for a bogey and was four shots behind. The long shot would have to be Wilcox, who learned to play from his mother, a golf pro at Pine Harbor in Alabama. Small for his age, he played at least 36 holes a day as a kid, a habit that only changed after he was old enough to drive. He played the Canadian Open when he was playing on the Canadian Tour. He qualified for the 2011 U.S. Open at Congressional, where his thrill was a practice round with Johnson and Padraig Harrington. And now this. Wilcox earned his card by finishing 10th on the Web.com Tour money list last year, though he fell back by not playing the Web.com Tour finals for what he said was ”personal stuff.” ”I didn’t know what was going to happen this week,” Wilcox said. ”Making the cut was a dream come true. Playing good on Saturday was a dream come true. Getting to have a decent shot tomorrow is ridiculous. We’ll see.” Having a decent shot might seem like a dream for Allenby considering where his game has been. He made only five cuts in 24 tournaments last year and had to use an exemption from career money (top 25) to get his card. Allenby has been making enough putts to at least give himself a chance, and for that, he credits the games he plays at home in Florida. What should have been taken as an insult as turned into a benefit. ”I’ve been playing the guys at Admiral’s Cove, all the 60-year-olds, and they make me putt out because they’re like waiting for me to miss,” he said. ”I keep shooting 7-, 8-, 9-unders and stuff with them. They’ve put me in a good mental state for out here on Tour.”
Qatar Petroleum (QP) and UOP LLC, a Honeywell company, have signed a joint research agreement on “Process Optimization of CO2 and Sulfur Components Removal from Natural Gases.”The agreement was signed at QP headquarters by Mohammed bin Saleh Al-Sada, Minister of Energy and Industry and Chairman of QP, and Rajeev Gautam, President and CEO of UOP.The primary aim of the research is for the treated natural gases to be more efficiently utilized in further processing operations such as in transporting natural gas in pipelines, in the production of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), natural gas liquids (NGL), liquefied natural gas (LNG), gas-to-liquids (GTL) products, and in associated/non-associated gas cleanup upstream petrochemical/fertilizer manufacturing plants.Al-Sada welcomed the agreement as an important milestone in Qatar’s gas industry. Al-Sada said: “Qatar is constantly working to facilitate the optimum development of its hydrocarbon resources, and this agreement is another step in that direction.”“Developing more efficient technologies to remove contaminants from natural gas will help boost Qatar’s reputation as a safe, reliable supplier of natural gas as well as high-quality products,” Al-Sada added.“Global natural gas demand is growing rapidly and LNG/LPG/NGL/GTL production is critical to meeting the needs of regions not served by pipelines and to enable global trade,” said Gautam. “Qatar Petroleum is a recognized leader in the production of LNG/NGL for world markets, and we look forward to extending our long-standing partnership to develop technology in these important fields.”QP operates its offshore gas platform and five NGL plants at Mesaieed Industrial City, and it is also a joint venture with Qatargas (which is the world’s largest LNG producer), RasGas (which is the world’s second-largest LNG producer), Shell’s Pearl GTL (which operates in Qatar the world’s largest GTL plant) and Oryx GTL Limited (which operates the second-largest GTL plant in Qatar). QP develops/operates onshore and offshore oil and gas fields in Qatar, including exploration, field development, production, refining, transport, and storage.QP has recently inaugurated a state-of-the-art Research & Technology Center (QPRTC) at the Qatar Science & Technology Park (QSTP) to carry out cost-effective research activities on subjects related to surface/sub-surface activities in oil & gas fields in cooperation with global R&D centers within national/international oil companies, technical universities, oil/gas service companies, etc.Honeywell’s UOP, on the other hand, is a leader in natural gas treating technologies, which currently are used in QP’s LNG and gas processing facilities.UOP’s separation technology and equipment remove contaminants such as water, carbon dioxide and sulfur compounds (hydrogen sulfide, mercaptans, etc.) from natural gas in order to meet rigorous product specifications and requirements for downstream transmission and liquefaction equipment. In liquefied form, natural gas can be easily and efficiently transported to markets around the world, where it is used for a wide variety of energy applications.Honeywell’s UOP Gas Processing and Hydrogen business unit offers technology, equipment and materials to treat and process natural gas, as well as to purify the hydrogen used in refineries. Its gas technologies extract water, mercury, sulfur compounds, carbon dioxide and other contaminants from raw natural gas. UOP also offers technologies that are widely implemented for LNG/LPG/ NGL production and for associated/non-associated gas cleanup upstream petrochemical & manufacturing plants. The business has supplied technology to more than 3,600 individual process units for gas processing in a broad range of applications through the world.UOP has increased its offerings in natural gas in recent years. Earlier last year, it launched UOP Separex Flux+ and Select membrane elements to remove contaminants such as acid gas and water from natural gas. In 2012, the company purchased a majority stake in Thomas Russell Co., which offers technologies and modularized packaged plants enabling shale and conventional natural gas producers to remove contaminants from natural gas and recover high-value NGLs used for petrochemicals and fuels. Thomas Russell products are now part of the UOP Russell line. Switzerland-based Gmelius, for instance, reimagines CRM with email as its center, given that email remains the central communication tool for salespeople.In Gmelius, emails that require action become task cards. Collaboration between teams can be managed from inboxes and with Google Calendar, notes and due dates can be attached to the tasks, inbox-linked automatic reminders help users keep track of due dates and messages can be logged into a standard CRM. Erik Hale, Global Enterprise executive for business process management at CRM/business process automation platform BPM’Online, told me that CRM “is evolving into more a complete business solution,” in part by taking some of the capabilities of the Customer Data Platform (CDP).He said his company’s CRM, for instance, offers some of the features often associated with CDPs, including the ability to handle unstructured data, orchestrate multiple channels in real time and provide tools for data cleaning, like de-duplication.But, he acknowledged, CDPs are more advanced in the ways that they handle data input from a wide range of sources. CRMs will continue to grow their capabilities as a platform that isn’t “just a [large] address book” for sales, he said, until CRMs overtake CDPs by absorbing their best features.CDPs as the superset. But Raviv Turner, CEO and co-founder of customer data platform (CDP) CaliberMind, sees a more fundamental transformation of CRM’s role in the customer journey, where CRMs become a kind of subset of CPMs.CRMs were born for B2B as sales tools for maintaining one-to-one relationships, and he sees traditional versions remaining in such a role for salespeople. It’s part of salespeople’s habitual workflow and their working data is in there.But their relative importance in B2B will change dramatically, he predicts.A large and growing portion of B2B customers now comes pre-sold to the salesperson. In other words, the IT manager who wants to buy new cloud services or the office manager buying new furniture for branch offices have extensively researched their purchases online before they ever connect with a salesperson. They have visited web sites, downloaded white papers, checked out expert or buyer reviews and pored over comparison charts.“It used to be, you pick up the phone and [the results of the conversation] get recorded into Salesforce [CRM],” he said. “Now, it’s 8 to 10, maybe more, touches [between the brand and the customer] before Salesforce.”That means that marketing now owns a much bigger role in the B2B sales cycle. And, Turner says, that means that CDPs will take a bigger role and reduce CRM’s, because CDPs are designed to handle personalization at scale, via big data.While this view supports CaliberMind’s position and vision as a CDP, CDPs do have advantages over CRMs.The customer management-at-scale advantages of CDPs. CDPs are designed to support one-to-many interactions, delivering data in real-time as well as collecting it and thus supporting the omni-channel approach required to market to B2B and B2C buyers, especially as new channels like smart cars, smart glasses, the Internet of Things and interactive TV really take off. By contrast, CRMs are intended to house data about one-to-one sales transactions.In addition to neatly arrayed structured data, CDPs are designed from the ground up to handle unstructured data, such as the kind that emanates from social and other channels, and to accommodate really big data.CRMs, CDP Institute founder David Raab has told me, were born as tools to replace sales agents’ Roladexes and contact cards and to assist contact center agents — not as the keepers of master identity profiles that are used across an organization’s many tools and channels.“Look at [CDP] as an intelligent switchboard,” Turner said, more optimized for personalization and for account-based marketing than lead-focused CRMs, and better able to take advantage of AI because the data is centralized and clean. He also noted that CDPs like his also have built-in tools for de-duplication and other data cleaning, something that CRMs may not.On the B2C side, it’s no contest, in Turner’s view. Consumer sales are now all about personalization delivered at scale, which favors CDPs. He said that consumer-focused organizations that have marketing automation platforms with CRMs built-in or attached will eventually need a customer data repository optimized for multi-channel performance.Neither CRM nor CDP? AI will eventually change CRMs, Turner predicts, possibly leading to a tool that combines both kinds of tools. He pointed out that Salesforce itself — the king of CRM — seems to be getting ready for a new level of platform-wide customer identity, with its recent acquisitions of Datorama and MuleSoft and its launch of Customer 360. Similarly, Oracle has recently launched what it describes as a “CDP-plus,” called CX Unity.Tony Kavanagh, CMO of CRM Insightly, told me he sees CRMs remaining as an automation tool for managing leads, opportunities and relationships, possibly with CDP as the master record underneath.But Patrick Salyer, GM of SAP’s Customer Data Cloud and formerly CEO of identity management platform Gigya (now owned by SAP), thinks both of the terms — CRM and CDP — are too limiting.CRMs are designed for sales use cases, he said, as in Salesforce, while CDPs are largely a tool for marketers. (One of the CDP Institute’s definitions of CDPs is that they need to be usable by non-technical marketers.)Instead, Salyer promotes the idea of a Customer Data Cloud, which contains privacy consent info and purchase history, in addition to demographic, behavioral and relationship data.Whatever they are called and however many separate incarnations there are for use cases such as sales, it appears the customer profile — the record of a customer’s history with a brand and with a sales person — is moving toward many more features, a greater ability to capture and utilize a wide variety of data, and support for the real-time and personalized engagement with users across platforms.This story first appeared on MarTech Today.
